I mean *ahem*, after you read this one, right?
This week’s True Story Tuesday brought to you from two decades ago at my first job (somebody please tell me I don’t look as old as that sounds??? ;)
IN THE LINE OF FIRE
I had a great first job. I had a minor’s work permit and started clocking hours at 14-years old at an accounting firm. I also had a great boss… remember how she didn’t fire me for “introducing” her car to my coworker’s car” 20 minutes after getting my driver’s license? Yeah… cool like that.
Anyway - I had my desk, my computer, my rainbow of highlighters… I was set.
Busy, busy, busy – fingers clicking away at the keyboard. Occasionally showing off my ten-key skills on the printing calculator (which was always set to PRINT, to ensure that my boss knew how hard I was working).
Completely in the groove: numbers flying, checks printing, pencils being worn to stubs – when it happens.
There is a sharp crack.
A burst of plaster and wood flies from the wall.
And an odd wind blows past my face.
See friends… next door was a place run by this sort:
a discount shop where you could get everything from windows to siding to…
oh yeah… there was a
that wasn’t quite being advertised for sale if you know what I mean…
And for some crazy reason, casual handling of it resulted in someone accidentally firing it.
A FEW INCHES FROM MY HEAD.
Yup, there was a beautiful hole in the wall between my computer and my head.
Like Mr. Daddy always says, “It’s the ‘unloaded’ gun that kills ya”.
